Hospital Seeing More Babies Born Exposed to Prescription Drugs

A hospital in Knoxville, TN has reported dramatically increasing rates of babies who have absorbed narcotics or other pain medicines taken by their mothers (becuase of addiction or for childbirth). After birth, these babies experience withdrawal from these drugs that involves seizures and even temporary blindness among other symptoms. The pain medicines are ingested by the babies when the dose is high enough that the drugs are absorbed by the placenta and subsequently the baby. Doctors attribute this problem to the overuse of pain medicines and hope to solve it by more closely monitoring pain medicine prescriptions for pregnant women.
