The three had come from different backgrounds and met through New York City’s networks of music, night life and, the police said, illegal drugs.
A middle-aged musician who had known a slice of fame. A 22-year-old underground D.J. with what friends said was ready access to the seamier sides of club life. And his female companion, who had moved to an apartment in the heart of Lower Manhattan from New Jersey.
None had serious run-ins with the law over the years. But the death of Philip Seymour Hoffman — and a chance tip from a man off the street — took narcotics investigators to three apartments at 302 Mott Street, where the three people were arrested on Tuesday evening. The police seized more than 350 packets of heroin.
